A critique of the church pt 2
Becky, a frequent reader of TBGC sent me this comment via e-mail. I thought she made some valid points so I am reposting it as a comment;
I'm not regular about checking your Blog, but it's up on my favorites list and I sure do enjoy it. I read the whole link re the Seattle churches, and have some thoughts., especially since the church my son attends (in LA) was shut down last week. (more on that later)
I think that a church that opens communion to everyone is slipping down a slippery path and unfortunately carrying a lot of folks along down. Case in point is my brother wife (a Thai Buddhist) blissfully takes communion then says over lunch she "doesn't need Jesus." When I confront my brother about taking the Lord's supper in an unworthy manner he explodes in a rage -- I'll spare the details.
A large church in Bellingham invited everybody to communion, and also baptized anybody. When I confronted the pastor about that he shrugged, "that's God's business." Shortly after that incident the church exploded apart when the pastor was discovered to be deep in sin -- Need we remind ourselves of all the similar stories?
Unless a new Christian -- or any Christian, for that matter -- understands the meaning of partaking in the body of Jesus, identifying with His death and understanding our need of a Savior, etc. don't you think our instruction and discipling has been remiss?
In the LA church an anointed gifted son of a ditto dad and mother who planted the church, was appointed senior pastor at age 29 so that his parents could move on and start another. Once in charge he appointed about 8 "leaders" to serve him, one of them a 300 pound 29 year old who had just married his second wife and was showing up in a limo with both wives and the assorted children to sit in the front rows of the church and to be "welcomed by the congregation." The pastor's explanation: We accept everybody.
The young man's father swiftly contacted the members, told them to stay away, and closed down the church. Thank God for a godly father....
Well, as Paul told Timothy, guard your doctrine-- avoid the profane and idle babblings...!
Maybe Guard Your Doctrine could be a required- for- graduation class at CFN, .... eh?
For what it's worth... back to the cookie dough.
Lots of love, B.

I think I should send this to Pastor Jon.
It has always disturbed me to see young children taking communion. We weren't encouraged or perhaps allowed is a better way to think about it until we had been through confirmation. But my church does have open communion and the Pastor does encourage everyone to partake. What I really find strange is when the Nun who plays the piano in our early service takes communion from a Protestant Pastor! But she belongs to an order that is so off the offical Catholic doctrine that we call them the "hippy nuns in -------" I think you will remember when we took you out to that huge barn at their farm.
