In the mean time I will maintain both sites but I will eventually close this one. The sooner the better. One of the things that the Belize team was able to do this year was to provide a hot lunch for the children at some of the schools. this was the first time at a hot lunch was given. As you can see from these pictures the children really enjoyed the hotdogs and eagerly lined up for them. For most of these kids this was the only hot meal they have each day. Suffice it to say that there wasn't any wasted hotdogs!

At last count there were over 70 "faces" involved with the group and it grows almost every day. If you are an alumni or current student and have not received an invitation to join the group it may be because we don't have your e-mail.

Staging in Seattle
The return of the Mission team has taken place and there are smiles all around. They arrived on time, if even a tad early from Houston where they had to change planes. The spouses were there to welcome back their better halves and it was joyous.

To hear the stories makes it even more pronounced that I did not go. I could understand them but boy did I feel left out. We will always wonder at the leading of the Lord that caused us to plan it this way for this year. As it turned out, it was the best solution. Many of you don't know but as soon as the team left I was diagnosed with shingles, a viral infection related to chicken pox. it has been three weeks and it is just about over. Bed rest, high end anti-viral medication and I was still in moderate to high discomfort. The doctor laughed when I told him that my wife was in Belize. He said had I been there with this, I could have suffered nerve damage and been in this type of pain for the rest of my life.
Now I don't want to start a debate about the healing nature of God, or His timing or sovereignty but me staying home seemed fortuitous.

I will be asking Sue to write up a mission trip report to post. With pictures, of which there are over 2000 to choose from. We looked at most of them over the last of couple of days.

Three more days

The Belize outreach team continues to shine! The latest reports indicate long term invitations for the team to remain or to return. That is always a good sign. It means the team have made themselves useful beyond the prescribed ministry. Of course none of them are planning to remain, that I know of. The "return" part is still up in the air.
To show the quality of the team, they voted to cut their sightseeing and R & R days at the end of the trip from two days to one day. The amount saved will pay for a student to attend high school for one year.

The Guatemala portion of the trip was very rewarding. The team ministered in the "back bush" among the Mayan people and enjoyed the challenge of three way interpretation. The picture count is now over 2000 so it will be fun harvesting the best for release here and on the Christ For The Nations Bible College facebook group.

We pick up the team on Thursday and I for one am ready. 17 days of my own cookin' is enough. Not that it is bad but it is lonely eating by myself.

Fighting the heat

No not here in BC but in Belize where the members of the 07 outreach team are working. They are building, painting, roofing and the heat is taking it's tole. The reports continue to be good. All the team is healthy but tired from the heat. Saturday will be a rest day for them but rest days means idle time which can bring on home sickness. Pray for them as they near the half way point.
They are headed to Gautama la next week to work with a group called Jungle Medics. They will be assisting Brian as he brings a mobile medical clinic t remote villages. The team will do screening, clean and dress minor wounds and help keep the many children who come entertained. Scenes like these are what they can expect. Taken from the 03 trip.

A good report

I have received a good report from the first few ministry opportunities in Belize. Sue said that the team has been great. They work hard and function well together. They will be doing their own cooking and clean up so they will get lots of chances to function well together.
She reports that the accommodation's have improved from the last time we were there. So they are not roughing it. Yesterday they ministered with an Anglican church, doing puppets and drama in the main service. This is great because puppets can say things that people might shy away from. Like having an alter call at an Anglican church. They rested in th afternoon and were having a private worship time in the evening to pray and prepare their hearts for this busy week.

After a long day and night of last minute prep, the outreach team boarded their plane bound for Belize.
Their flight was supposed to leave at 6:00AM from Seattle. This involved a midnight departure from the college. You know, I thought the students looked sleepy during class. That is nothing compared to what they look like at 3:00 in the morning! The trip to the airport was without incident but then the fun began.
The plane was late leaving Alaska, pushing it's arrival time two hours. This of course squeezed the layover time in Huston causing them to run from plane to plane. Once seated they were told that due to weather the take off would be delayed. So now they sat on the plane.
They did take off and made it to Belize city just a bit late. I got an e-mail this morning from the host, assuring me all was well.
I miss um already, well I miss Sue. Pray for them, pray for the ministry, pray for the families!

It is Finished

After all the work and organization it is nice to see an event be successful. Mrs B and her team did a great job with decorations and the food was good. We had a larger then expected crowd. I think it may have been the largest ever for a commencement. The speaker was Pastor Paul from Cariboo Road Christian Fellowship. Paul was one the first graduates we had, finishing in 1992. His message was inspiring and re-enforced the call of God on the lives of the grads and the rest of too.

The walk across the platform included the degree recipients kneeling down and having their hood placed on their shoulders. It made for an emotional time and they rose from their knees with their new hood draped across their shoulders. Honor and high honor awards followed for many of them.

We also gave away several Awards and Grants for the first time this year. The recipients did not know till their name was called. Fun time!!

It will go down in the history books as one of the worst mass killings in the US history. It has been confirmed that a permanent resident from South Korea is responsible for both shootings. Headlines under one picture of the aftermath just asked the question, "Why?" No one will ever know. All that is left now is the question of how will we react and who will get the blame. Already there are calls for the President of the University and the police chief to be fired for the handling of it. Soon the shooter will be excused because of "minority oppression" or some other politically correct diagnosis.
In the final analysis the hurt of the survivors will fester until some one reaches out and touches them with true love. Love that does not explain, excuse or justify. Love that holds and comforts and listens. Love that sounds like Jesus.

Many stories will come from this but for me this one stands out.

I sometimes cry when I listen to the radio. I know, that shatters some of the mystic that I had with one or two of you but it true. Some songs just hit me. I remember the first time I heard "Butterfly kisses" it just shook me.

Well I heard another one today. It is called "Swingsets in Heaven" and is sung by Roger Allen McGill. I have searched for it but have been successful in finding out much about him or the song lyrics. But boy oh boy did it make me puddle up!

Well maybe that is too dramatic. It is the second full day of final exams and many of you can remember that feeling all too well.

Even though class time is delayed till 8:45, the line was outside the gate when Sue and I arrived to unlock it before eight. Last minute cramming and the nervous laughter that always marks this season is ringing in our ears combined with the sheer joy in the eyes of the instructors. One last torture session and the trial is over for another year.

Grad is this Saturday for those in the area. It starts at 1:00 Pm and is followed by a stand up reception. Join us!

I wore one of my Hawaiian shirts today. When I was asked why I replied that it was my last day of school for the term! I have all my assignments graded all that is left is the exams. It is a good feeling to be done. The year has been good. The chapels and Tuesday night services were uplifting both during the worship but also during the lectures. God spoke through the men and women that joined us during our Tuesday evening service this year.
The commencement ceremony complete with the hooding of our first degree recipients takes place on Saturday, April 21st. If you are local please join us. We will have a time of refreshment after.

It was Easter at the home of #1 son and his wife. We were joined by the rest of the family; daughter, son and daughter-in-law. BJ's sister also made the journey south from the Great White North to share in the random sunshine of Seattle. Three dogs rounded out the grouping and it was family time at its best.

As the world wakes up on this "normal day" and goes about it's business, I wonder how many Christians pause to think about what the day actually means. This year of all years, the presenters of the messages in the pulpits of the church should be stressing the bodily resurrection of Jesus. The miracle of the Easter morning is not that the stone was rolled away. Or that an angel spoke to Mary, or that the tomb was empty. The miracle was the risen Christ. Jesus left His place at the side of the Father to obediently come to earth to live among mankind. Though sinless, He suffered death for our sakes and a cruel death it was. The romans who were experts at death, pronouced him dead and he was hastily wrapped and spiced.
But praise God the story does not end there. Jesus Christ rose from that tomb, walked, talked, taught, teased and even ate with His followers. As the first born from the dead, Jesus makes a way for us. Jesus is alive! and because He lives I shall live too!

Looking towards the cross.

Passion Week is here and at the end stands the Cross. During our lifetime, if we are lucky, we will experience many for these weeks. But the Cross should be a once and for all time experience. You find yourself at the cross, kneeling in spirit, asking for the Lord to forgive you of your sins and failings. He does and we stand forgiven. The rest of our life should be spent in the shadow of the cross, remembering what He did for us and how we should then live our life.

Unfortunately many times we, myself included, have needed to return to the cross, seeking forgiveness and a restoration of relationship. Rather then victorious we have been defeated by our own weaknesses. We spiral down until we feel separated from Christ. Fortunately God is there, still holding out His hands to us. The price has already been paid and we experience that release again. Each time we pledge to live better.

Wouldn't our life be better is we could just hold on to that position? Instead of spirally down, just circle and look to Christ as soon as the "failing" has taken place. Keep a short list with God. Come daily to Him and confess. His faithfulness is secure and He will restore. Why spend time away from Him?

During this Easter season see the Cross, but more importantly see the Saviour who daily meets our needs.

After months and months ( okay, weeks..well days) of rain it has finally broken and the sun is actually shining! Quick look before it hides again.

The river that runs through our parking lot is now only two meters wide. Granted it is only three centimeters deep but it runs a lot of water. It is fun living here on the West Coast as it is so easy to laugh at the weather. With a day of sunshine the grass and the flowers are quickly coming to life. The green is brilliant and almost hurts the eyes.

I know that those who read this from the great white North scoff at our "bad" weather and I would not want to trade with them. But the ark jokes are getting old and no we are not collecting animals.

Of course I did not take voluminous notes but I did get the ten main points.

1. God is a fair Father. Deut. 32:4, Eph. 6:4
2. God is a loving Father. Ps. 145:17
3. Father God is a strong disciplinarian. Heb. 12:6
4. Father God allows us to chose. Deut. 30:19
5. Father God allows consequences. Gal. 6:7
6. Father God gives us freedom. Gal. 5:1
7. Father God teaches. Ps 32:8
8. Father God understands us. Ps. 103:14
9. Father god is positive and affirming.
10. Father God calls us to greatness.

His final statement capped it all off. The greatest parenting principle: You get the behavior you reward.

Learn from God?

My Pastor, Ted had a great sermon yesterday. He has been on a series from Acts but has broken it up with sermons from different topics. Yesterday he spoke on the example God the Father left us on how to raise our own children.
Using the way we are encouraged to look to "Abba father", Pastor Ted lead us through a ten point message that had us laughing as well as thinking about our own experiences. Ten points may violate some rule of preaching but not in this case. He presented a very strong case for keeping the next generation hungry for God and a relationship with Him.
It is fun to attend a church that touches the heart of relationships. We laugh together and cry together. We baptize, marry and sometimes even see an elder saint depart for heaven. Life is found at the foot of the cross but is lived day to day in the world. If you are not learning to live life in the world, remaining strong from its fatal attractions, then why do you go to church?

First came the rain

The rain was followed by rain, rain, and more rain. We were soaked this weekend, roads flooded some partly washed way and the rubble is everywhere today. A bit of sunshine and it feels normal again but we will be several days drying out.

The property to the west had been the sight of several abandoned houses. The whole property is up for development into townhouses and that require removal of the old houses. they started knocking them down Friday and found several "residents" had not moved on to other locations. These modern day squatters are homeless individuals who occupy condemned houses. Two came running out of the crawl space, narrowly escaping injury.

Several of our students have been trying to reach out to them over the last few weeks but they either are too high to talk to or are not interested. We will continue to pray for them as the neighborhood changes. Between CFNBC and the churches that hold meetings here on the weekend the hand of God is being extended to them. The witness is evident.

The changing to Daylight Savings Time occurred again last night. Well technically at 2:00 AM this morning. No one I know understands the reasons any more for making the change. We just keep doing it and adjusting our lives. I think the adjusting part is good, it keeps us from becoming too stale, but I wonder how many other things we do because "we have always done it this way" without really thinking of why.

In our fellowship with our spouse it is important to keep the spark alive. I look for ways to keep it fresh. But do I look for ways to keep my relationship with God fresh too. Or do I just keep on doing what I have always done.

Be challenged in your faith, make it fresh and new every morning.

Having been gone for a week and returning just in time for the mid semester reading week means I have not seen the students for almost two weeks. It has gone by way too fast. Top the mood off with three inches of fresh snow for March first and you have the feeling this morning.

Our pastor has prepared a "Lenten" style devotional again this year. We are several days into it and each morning it speaks to us. Today's encouragement was to surrender control of those areas of our life that are still trying to be "like God" and allow Him to be Lord over them. Old theme, but it never hurts to be reminded of it over and over. I know I have areas that need to be re-given to His lordship. How 'bout you?

Where does the time go?!

I just looked at my last post and realized it was ten days ago! Wow. One of the things I wanted to do with this Blog was be regular. Not so, I guess I am lazy, busy, forgetful or some other lame excuse.
Valentine's day has come and gone. My take on the day is reflective of my gender. A special day to give flowers and candy. Why not a special day to give tools or steak? But I also recognize the value of honoring the great gift I have in my beautiful wife. So I bought flower and made a card. I even made up a poem for the inside. Not good but heartfelt.
I am going away next week for a conference. I have to suffer in Florida! Don't be surprised if I fail to write next week. I may not be able to see the screen out by the pool!

Mission Trip!

Prayer and discussion has turned to plans and action. Sue is planning a return outreach trip to Belize. We have a number of students who have expressed interest and the contacts have been made.
If the make up is similar to the last Belize team, we will have a work project to do. The last time we made shelves for the town library. Many schools and villages opened for us and we saw the light of Christ shine on faces like these.We visited Guatemala and helped in a medical mission too.
The details are still in the planning stage and while the members are excited the real work now begins. Morning prayer, evening prep time and oh yeah, fund raising.
I will keep you posted as the plans and team comes together.

Like a Thief in the Night

We woke up this morning to the news that a major storm had bashed Florida. Normally we don't have any kin in Florida, but this year Sue's mom and dad are wintering there. So our ears perked up and we used Google Earth to find out how close they were to the path of the storm. They appear to be okay, the storm was north of them, but as we watched the news the pictures showed a Church building completely destroyed. The only way to identify it was by the steeple which now lay on its side on the ground. As the cameras were filming, the people from the area began to gather around the former "church" building. The newscaster said something like "there is a great example of the spirit of people. It is not the building that is the church but the people." "and the church is gathering to rebuild their meeting place"
Wow, all that from a news anchor. I could not have said it better myself.

Foggy Morning

We just returned from church this foggy Sunday morning and once again I am reminded how important it is to have a solid church home to relate too. Pastor is speaking a series from the book of Acts and is speaking truth. The early church worked it's way through a murky path; were they just a Jewish sect or were they a different faith altogether. When the legalists came to the church to add requirements to the new believers, the leadership stood up and defended the freedom of the believers and our acceptance was secured. Salvation by faith based on the Grace of God, apart from works is worth defending. Don't be afraid to teach the truth.
Remember truth is true even if no one believes it and
Error is error even if every one accepts it.

One of our alumni has contacted us here at the college concerning the health of their little girl. Several days of severe stomach problems have left her weak and in need of re-hydration. She is scheduled to see a specialist and we are being asked to hold her up before the Throne of Grace. Her parents are both at their wits end and their health is suffering as well.

Father, we lift up this family to you asking for your touch. Strengthen this little girla dn encourage her parents in their faith. Let the body of Christ come together and be in support of them during this time. We know they love you, have aceepted you and are walking before you, trusting in your guidence and comfort.

The world has all the answers. If we are having a "bad" day we can look to the "wisdom" of man for our comfort. In that vane (vain) this article tells us to be blue today because it is the saddest day of the year!

Another Tuesday, another storm!

But this time we still made it to school. We only received 10 cm of snow with this storm but it was wet and heavy. Now the rain is on the way which will make the pretty white covering turn to mush.

We had to cancel last Tuesday evening service so tonight will be our first of the 2007 year. It is exciting to think that at the end of this term we will graduate recipients of the Bachelor of Theology for the first time. We awarded the BA to several last Fall but they were recent grads who fulfilled all the requirements before we actually were chartered. The Board of Governors voted to award the degree based on the timing of the actual charter. But this Spring Commencement will see the first cap and gown ceremony. Wow!

Weather oh weather!

We are off to a great start for 2007! After registration Tuesday, the faculty were doing last minute prep for the first class while keeping one ear open to the sound of the wind as it howled outside. The forecast was for snow but we felt secure because it was suppose to arrive during the night. The cookies and coffee were prepared for the after-service gathering and everything was set. Then it all went black, blinked on, off, on again and then off for the final time. We waited till 5:30 and then canceled the opening rally. A call list had already been printed, PTL and we began calling the students.
This morning a nice white blanket covered the ground, the weather dog confirmed it was still snowing and after the coffee was ready I proceeded to the school to make ready for the day. I figured after the power outage I would have major problemos to rectify before the students arrived at 8:00. Well much to my surprise it was still dark and lonely looking at 19533 64th ave. So back to the phones and the announcement that the first day of classes were being canceled.

Faces, traces, and spaces

We welcomed back the returning students today. There were some surprises (students we did not expect to return), disappointments (some who did not return), and shock (those from way back that returned) so all in all it was exciting.

It is always a rush when we begin to enter data into the school information system. We only access that portion of the program twice per year and it is amazing how much you can forget in six months. That is why we register the returning students first. That way we have the bugs worked out before we have to make a good first impression with the new students. After sitting in class with us for a semester or more, we have nothing to prove to the returning students. They KNOW we are a bunch of flawed humans. but so are they.

The new ones come in on Tuesday. Still counting the number so we really have no idea how many are going to be here. we still have room, if you are contemplating coming back to finish, give us a call. here is still time to enroll!

By now the noise maker are silent again. The year has changed and we have a chance to begin fresh. But as I have noted before, we as Christ followers don't need to wait until the change of a calendar. The old Testament followers of Yahweh could only be "clean" once per year when the high Priest went into the Holy of Holies and followed the prescribed routine. But now we can just bow our head, where ever we are and be "clean" again.

The school year begins shortly and we are excited about what lay ahead.

A sign of the times....

I saw a news article today about vandals slashing an inflatable snowman in front of a home. It seems it was the third time for the snowman to be destroyed. The home owners, wanting to believe in the goodness of people during this season replaced the snowman after the first time it was cut up. Well after the second time they put a camera out there and sure enough the stupid vandals came back.
They were arrested and I hope face jail time!

Family night

The last Tuesday service of the Fall term is normally a "family night" with a christmas focus. We sing traditional Christmas hymns, have a short message, Christmas related and usually a skit or two.
Well last night we enjoy several items. The Covenant class continued the "rap" tradition with two songs. the first was a take on the 12 days of Christmas, called the "eight days". It was a audience participation song and got everyone involved. the second song featured four differnt languages sing "feles navidad". It was great.
Five other students performed a skit to remind us that it is Jesus not the tree, or turkey or even Santa that is the true meaning for Christmas.
For those students who came, the evening provided a break from studying for exams. We had hot chocolate and cookies planned but a father showed up with surprise birthday cakes for his daughter (one of our students). So we had treats galore.
It was a great time for all.

There is a young girl who is part of our extended family who was just diagnosed with liver cancer. I don't very often make appeals like this but if I could ask you to pray for her, her folks and grandparents (my uncle is her step-granddad).

Her name is Laurel and she is 13.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

What a difference a year makes! Last year at this time we were a small private Bible school offering a diploma for completing our programs of study, and now we are a small private Bible school offering a Bachelor’s degree in Practical Theology. This change has come in response to the educational needs of our students and through the hard work of our dedicated staff. We also have prepared a completion program for recent graduates who would like to return and complete their degree.

However, CFNBC is not only about degrees. We still believe the best witnesses for Christ are individuals who have experienced Him in Spirit and truth. Through daily chapels, prayer, classes, and times of reflection the Spirit directs our learning, growing and equipping process.

In connection with Spring Commencement we are planning to host an alumni homecoming (April). Many of our alumni have prayed for our growth, our larger building, and our degree granting status. We want to honor you for your prayer support as we are now enjoying the fruit of those faithful prayers.

This year has been a year of blessings and challenges. The staff and students recognize that without the faithful financial partners who support the college our tuition rates would have to increase substantially. We are so thankful to those who help us keep Christ For The Nations Bible College affordable so that more servants can be trained. That if you look at a grave stone, often you will see the dates written for the birth and the death of some one. It is usually written in this format, 1945-2006. He observed that if we are still alive then we are living in the "dash," that undetermined length of time represented on a tombstone as a "-" in between a birth date and a death date. As anyone can tell you, life is a dash, a race in which everyone will finish the same. Only Jesus won the race against death. and He won by overcoming death.

Pastor Doug Bursch of Evergreen Life Ministry visited my daughters church this weekend. Among the many things he said was an encouragement to not live in the past or the future. But to live each day as the Lords gives it. Fresh and new every morning. We have eternal life, it will be there when we arrive. Right now we are surrounded by people and things that need our attention. Lets focus on the here and now, contributing to the ongoing witness of a present day Savior who is the same today as He was and will be.

So today I am "chief cook and bottle washer" (phrase my pops used often) which means that I am alone at the office, answering phones today at CFNBC. After calling another snow day I felt I should at least man the office. At FOUR AM (yes i was up)this morning they were still calling for freezing rain and "a horrible commute". So I left a message on the answering machine of the college number to announce the cancellation of classes. That way the students could merely call to verify that classes were on before they started on the commute. Not all of them called, some I am sure just assumed and some just showed up here.
It was not a total loss though. Because I was here a potential student's paperwork was brought in, a rental inquiry was made for a wedding and deliveries were made. Could we have had school? Yes in hind sight I guess we could have. But at 4:00, all you can do is trust the weatherman. Did I just say that? Trust a weatherman? Maybe I need a nap.

There are times when voices from the past surprise you. Today I talked to some one that I had not spoken to in nine years. This former student is back in the East and is on track with God. He did admit that he did enter a downward spiral for some time ending up with his back to God. As he paused, much like the prodigal son, he turned and found God's hand outstretched to him again. He grasped it and is back on track.

It takes courage to turn back to God when we stumble. Cowardice keeps many separated from the love of the Father. I pray that if I ever find myself feeding pigs, I will have the courage to come back home to the Fathers house. I pray this for you too. Take heed lest you think you can't be deceived, for you already are. That sounds like scripture, doesn't it?

The "other voice" was an e-mail contact with some one from the Island. For those that don't know my family served as missionaries for several years in Jamaica. One of our former students e-mailed me asking how we were doing. What a joy to hear from the past. Ya' man! No problem, man.

Snow Day!

Boy does that bring back memories!
But now instead of being a student who can enjoy the day off, I am the principle who must weigh the risks of travel verses the course schedule. The risks won out today.

Here in the 'burbs of Vancouver we got about 45 centimeters of snow, the first 25 wet heavy, barely freezing snow. The remainder is dry and blowing. Makes for a interesting drive anywhere. Most everything was shut down today. All public schools are closed as are the colleges. So instead of teaching, we are spending the day in front of our Christmas tree, sippin' hot coffee and believe it or not grading papers. Boo!

Life in a small town.

I just returned from a whirlwind trip to the small Southeastern Indiana town where my sister and brother in law live. My folks have set up house in a small bungalow near by and will plan to winter there. After my mothers bout with the big C this year, I knew I needed to make an effort to see her more often. Although it was a long flight and short visit, it was great to see them. My brother and sister in law even drove over from Chi-town to join us. I had not seen them for several years, we each have aged very gracefully.

Sue and I are actually part of the "missional" vision of the Methodist church there. They support us annually and call us the "little finger" of the hand of Christ extended from their church. It was good to meet the new pastor, reconnect with the folks and feel the warmth of a small community.

I saw a local parade, complete with sappy floats, plenty of waves and candy (thrown from the floats). The high light of the parade for me was the group of motorcyle riders known as the "Patriot Guards" This group of volunteers travel to the funerals of fallen military and support the families. Made famous by their stance agaisnt the (very small "b") baptist church that mocks and disrupts these funerals, the riders just position themselves between the family and any undue attention. It is done not because they support the war, but because they care about the sacrifices that are being made. Oh if I only had a Harley!

Last night I mentioned to the students that we officially had only one month until the end of the Fall 2006 term. That means 2006 is all but over. Wow, where has it gone. Have you accomplished what you set out to do this year? Lets see a show of hands that got everything done. Waiting..Waiting...still waiting. So I am not the only one that will face an even long "to do" list again next year? Well I think I am in good company.

Soggy Northwest!

The pineapple express has roared into the pacific Northwest this week end and we are being pelted with high winds (nearing hurricane strength) and rain, rain, rain. The amount of rain on the ground makes the high winds more dangerous. Saturated ground will not hold the roots of trees as well. One advantage is many of the leaves are gone after a blustery Friday.

The students arrived wet and soggy from just the parking lot. We are expecting it to last for a week or two. Storm after storm are lined up all the way from Hawaii.

To make the best of it we are having a chili day today. We started having "Soup days" last year as a way to encourage fellowship among the students. One of the staff cooks a big pot of soup and we gather round the tables for a scrumptious meal, breaking bread together. Today's feature is Sue's Chili." Last year it contained two home grown habenero peppers and raised the heat twice. We cut back on the peppers this year but will have a bottle or two of extra heat for those more gutsy eaters. Nothing like a hot bowl of chili on a rainy day. Now if we only had a fireplace and a rocking chair to go with it.....

The retreat up at Stillwood proved to be a fantastic event. First the place is beautiful, not at all what I expected.

There were many events to keep us busy. Hikes, trees, games, friends and even a fire pit. But the most important aspect of the retreat was the oppurtunity to draw closer to God in the quiet times and the general session.

Pastor Ted gave a fantastic series of talks on the Lord's Prayer. Each one touched "spots" within each of us as the Holy Spirit used the well known words to open up our hearts.

As each of those in attendance should remember the retreat but we must keep our eyes forward, looking to the horizon for life lies before us. It is not possible to live in a retreat environment, nor should we want too. We must live here in the day to day, drawing from the same Lord, His prayer and the Spirit who guides us here as He did up in Stillwood.

Retreat!

Not in the military sense but as a choice to drawback from the rush of day-to-day. CFNBC is going on a three day retreat up to Camp Stillwood. It is just out in the valley towards Mt. Baker and it is supposed to be beautiful.

We have events planned but there will be plenty of free time. Time to think, plan, pray, read and draw closer to God. I think of the 80 something song about "the warrior is a child" and plan to do as the song indicated. Draw close to my father.
There will be a bit of separation anxiety too. No cell service, internet, e-mail, TV or radio. Of course no blogging. But there will be coffee. Or so I am told.

I have been with people in the past that refused to use the word "retreat" as it gave place to the enemy. "Why, we can't retreat and pull back! Stay the course, never give up! Keep that old nose to the grind stone." Well we are going on a RETREAT and will come back stronger and better equipped to defeat anything that comes our way.

Never ending road repair!

Or as we like to call it, "the bumper car track" at Cedar Point. It is the main Provincial highway, just lower in traffic to the Number 1 expressway. It is Fraser Highway and it is undergoing a major improvement project. Our portion, the part we drive on daily is going to four lanes, yeah! But before it gets there we endure a slalom course of telephone poles left in the road. That's right, the new road was built and paved around the poles. As the picture shows it is a mess. Every now and then a pole gets hit, broken off and has to be replaced. Last night on our bike ride, we stopped and talked to a crew fixing one of the poles. After laughing with them about it's location in the middle of the road, the foreman of the crew started to complain about the lack of pre-planning concerning the poles. He said that the new plans, read that as the new location of the poles, has not even been worked out yet.
Here you have a multi million dollar revision and the last thing to be moved is the poles! That should have been first, or near the first item to be planned. He said they may even bury the lines. Now that makes sense except that the curbing, grass, landscaping and sidewalks are all in already. The time to bury is long past.
Oh well, at least they painted the lines.

A good friend wrote me this account of her personal thoughts just after the Amish killings this past week. She alludes to a chilling experience when her daughter and granddaughter were killed. The grace she walks in has always amazed me.

Redefine Disaster

Yesterday I'd spent an hour or more trying to put my thoughts together when suddenly "glitch!" and I lost it all. But within seconds I acquiesced; the writing wasn't getting anywhere. Most likely an angel popped in and erased it right before my eyes.

This week I am moved so much by the sight of an Amish mother walking with a police officer between a battery of cars, reporters, ambulances etc. It threw me back to the picture of myself on the front page of the paper the morning after Nora and Lauren's murder -- my being escorted by a policeman away from the scene.

I wanted to talk about it, but with all the anguish coming back, even numbness creeping up my arms, everything seemed to evaporate no matter how much I wanted to say something. I surmise that big angel knew exactly what I needed: a quiet day by myself.

An empty house (her daughterher and son in law away), a foggy day; snack and sleep, finish my knitting, mind the store and remember God.

The Bible study lesson, back in May, 1983, was this: The Word of God is absolutely dependable, no exceptions. If your experience contradicts the word then you need to reexamine your experience.

How could that be?

I made an appointment with Bob Stevens, who wrote the study, and challenged him. "It says right here in my Bible that 'no disaster will come near your tent.' How then can you explain the murder of my kids?"

At that very moment when I stared him down and his kind eyes across his desk transfixed mine, the Holy Spirit showed up, almost like a spot light across his desk. "Then we have to redefine disaster." He said the words, but I heard them simultaneously in my heart. "There is no disaster except separation from Christ!" (The truth is shocking when it hits like that!)

I haven't spoken to him since, but I called him up, introduced myself, and reminded him of my visit. Do you remember how the Holy Spirit showed up and what He told us, that day?

"Well, yes," he said thoughtfully. "That's true, isn't it? It will always be the ultimate disaster. Dying without Christ." (Oh, how I thank God for a steadfast Christian brother!)

The sweet Amish community has shown the world their faith in God. Even the children, one whose last words were, "Kill me first, and let the rest of them go."

[Jesus told his disciples, "And do not fear those who kill the body, but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." Matt.10:28] Sunday. Another quiet day, and much to ponder.

One of our staff\students, Patty has left today to join other recruiters on the annual CCUFair tour. She will be promoting CFNBC in nine cities and several schools from Winnipeg to Vancouver. Please pray for her as she represents not only CFN but Christian Higher education in general. As more people see Christian Higher ed as a viable option more students will enter the whole spectrum of schools. This will have a positive effect on the quality of leaders and lay people in our churches. The choices are broad, there is a school to fit every need (well almost) and CFNBC has benefited from these tours in the past.
So pray for Patty.

How sweet the voices sound

Today as I listened to the students gently singing "How Great is our God" I was reminded of what we here at CFNBC are actually doing. The passion and desire of the students to know the heart of God, their father, comes out is their voices. These voices will one day join with the never ending chorus singing around the throne. In the mean time, taking what they learn from the whole college experience these laborers will take to the "streets" to touch others for Christ. Whether in the workplace, further schooling, the home, even in the church they will spread their passion to others.

It is always amazing how God brings a consistent message to us. In the opening rally of the new term I spoke from Ester about the timeliness of everyone's presence at CFNBC this year. In a nutshell, God had\has a purpose for us being here and we are to allow the fulfillment of His plan for this time.

Last night, normal Tuesday service, the speaker came from the same set of verses and brought another timely message. His points were:
1. That we need to understand the call or task we have been given.
2. We need to see the power of unity in fulfilling that call and
3. Be spiritually prepared for it.

Same verse, different message. That is one reason why the Bible continues to speak to us despite being used for 2000 years. It is as current today as the people who use it to guide their lives.

Corn Maze

Saturday night Sue and I joined the students at the first Student Life event of the season. We gathered at the Bose family farm and battled wits with the corn maze. It was just turning dusk as we began and was soon flashlight time. This enhanced the maze and made it more of a challenge. We did not get lost this year, finishing at the same time as the rest of the crew. Last year we wondered around for an extra 45 minutes between the last two clues. Boy were we glad to get out!
After, we roasted marshmallows and stared at the fire for a bit.
All in all a great time. I will post some pictures when I download them.

Sorry for the silence

Silence, what a thought provoking word. Some people can do it very well. Others are terrified by it. I am in the middle. I enjoy it at times but I also enjoy conversation too. Oh, and music. And the sound of tools, planes, dogs, well I guess just about everything.

About the absence of posting, I could blame the "time saving" features of our computer world. We were able to upgrade some of our oldest (some over seven years old)systems at the college and since I am the IT guy (what a scary thought) it meant lots of work for me. It is not complete yet. We are trying to set up a wireless system for the students to Use and it is complicated by our intranet system. We want the two to be totally separate and secure. Not that we don't trust the students, right?
I should be back on track again with regular posts.

I was glad the speaker came last night for the Tuesday service. The students had to listen to me the last two weeks and I know they needed a break. Walter was great as always, challenging us to find out what a "spirit filled" life really is.

Five years ago the world changed. Not just the USA but the whole world. It was a day that we should never forget. Yet modern psychiatrists tell us to move on with our life. To leave the past behind. Each one of us has something in our past that would wear us down if we allow our thoughts to dwell there. But as we give those memories to God, He takes the weight of them. They are still a part of us, like a scar, serving as a reminder of; a lesson learned, a hurt overcome, a victory, or a defeat. But it is only a person who is alive that can feel a scar.

On this day five years ago, the morning after, new hope began to emerge. We may not be able to fully explain the reason why we have a hope within, but we have to be able to give credit where credit is due. Our hope lay in the words of Jesus, declaring that He was preparing a place for us. No matter how bad it will get here in this life, we do have something better waiting for us.

The Fall term has arrived.

The students are back and the first day of classes are history. After the annual opening rally feast, the worship time featured our new worship leader, Veronica. Veronica works in the front office and is the cheerful voice you hear on the phone when you call. Her husband Lenin, who just returned from Afghanistan, has joined us as Student Life coordinator. Lenin has a passion for evangelism and will be re-introducing our students to the joy of street work with downtown mission such as Union Gospel Mission.

This year marks the first time our incoming class is dominated by men. Fellows out numbered the girls two to one in the freshmen class. India and Quebec are represented this year along with Korea, Taiwan, Haiti, Iran, and the US. It is going to be a great International dinner later this term.

I challenged the students last night with the same challenge Mordecai gave to Esther.(Es 4:14) They are here in this place for this season to accomplish something greater then themselves. Even though the steps on their journey may seem random, God has directed them to be here. It will be up to them how much God is able to accomplish in them.

It is shaping up to be a great year.

I was reading in the Bible this morning and started in Ezekiel. Now there is a hard book to start with. I have never fully understood the symbols and visions that he had. I finished up by reading in Revelation. In light of the visions of Ezekiel, I saw the warning to the churches a bit different.
In fact I saw them as they related to me. I wondered which of the seven churches I most closely relate too. At first I thought it must be Ephesus, for I saw the part about “not bearing those who are evil”, testing for false apostles and being on the right side.
Then I thought, why not Smyrna who was persecuted and poor. Pergamos maybe. Thyatira definitely not.
But wait, I am like all of them. I have left my first Love, well not left but I am not as hot for it as I once was. (Ephesus)
I have not borne my poverty well. (Smyrna)
I am not sure what a Nicolaitan is, so I may have friends who hold to their doctrine.(Pergamos)
Now I am just reflecting here but maybe I need to read it a bit closer and find out just where I really am. I do know one thing; Jesus is a forgiving Savior and even in the warning to the churches He gave them hope. I only need to overcome.

About a year ago a Islamic rights group in Ontario wanted the right to impose Shariah Law in non-civil cases involving Moslems. Their claims were that it would not effect the rest of Canada or other Canadians. It was turned down but I think the vote was close. Any way in light of that attempt I pass this little nugget along. bear in mind that this women is no longer a Moslum but is still being subjected to Shariah law.

In 1998, Azlina binti Jailani changed her name to Lina Joy and was baptized a Catholic in a church in Kuala Lumpur. Ms. Joy now wants the government to stop classifying her as a Muslim.

But it isn't that simple: While Muslim-majority Malaysia is considered a largely moderate, modern society, renouncing one's Muslim faith still is considered both sinful and illegal by Islamic authorities -- who have gained increasing sway of late. Ms. Joy's apostasy case, now before Malaysia's highest court of appeal, has inflamed public debate, divided the legal community -- a Muslim lawyer supporting Ms. Joy has received death threats -- and threatens to set off political tremors in this Southeast Asian nation of 25 million people.

The landmark legal ruling, expected within a month, will help define Malaysia's character as a nation.

"We are at a crossroad, whether we go down the line of secular constitutionalism or whether that constitution will now be read subject to religious requirements," says Benjamin Dawson, one of Ms. Joy's lawyers.

Malaysia has been governed for more than a half century by a tradition of civil law passed on by former British colonial rulers. A separate shariah, or Islamic, legal system has co-existed with civil law specifically to govern the religious lives of Muslim citizens, who are mostly ethnic Malays. About 40% of the population is ethnic Chinese, Indians and other minorities of other faiths.

But conservative Islam's rise as a political force in the 1980s and 1990s has propelled pro-Western Malaysia -- and its legal system -- on a steady swing to the religious right. The government has ceded some powers once held by the civil-justice system to the shariah courts.

While the Quran states there should be "no compunction" in religion, Islamic authorities world-wide consider apostasy both a sin and a crime. In Malaysia, Islamic courts can sentence apostates to "rehabilitation" in prison-like re-education centers that sometimes use caning as part of their program.

Although Malaysia's constitution guarantees freedom of religion, civil courts now routinely refer any cases involving Islamic matters for adjudication in shariah courts. And the shariah courts almost never grant Muslims the right to leave the religion.

Not perfect but who is?

Most of the students will remember "the bowl." It sits on my shelf and I have used it for more then one illustration in class. It is made from a chunk of cast away wood that I found on the side of the road. It was mossy, dirty, and looked like it might be good for burning. I by-passed it three times before I stopped and picked it up.

I decided I would see what I could do with it. You see, I am an amateur wood turner. I loaded this sixty pound chunk into my car and brought it home. There I used a variety of tools to cut away the dirt and moss. I also sort of rounded it into a turning blank. After I mounted it to the lathe, I issued a short prayer and turned the machine on. Now being an amateur, I don't have the proper machine to turn something that size. But I am not all that smart.

As I turned on the lathe, it jumped and hopped all over. Wow! that was impressive! So I loaded up the lathe stand with all the free weights and sandbags I could. Then I turned it on again. Still shaky but turn-able. I put chisel to wood and watched the shavings fly.

Lots of shaving and dust later I realized many things. God talks to me while I am working with wood. As I cut away the dirt, bark and moss I heard the Father say to pay attention. Just as I was removing the old, dirty outside so He removed the old man from me. Just as I was exposing the beauty of the color and character of the block of wood, so He revealed that in me. The block lost much of its original shape, weight, and moisture. (more on that last one later) But the original nature of the wood remained.

So it is with us. God can shape us and remove from us those things that are unfit but He leaves the person we are. Although like the “chunk” I started with, it is no longer recognizable. As I turned the chunk, defects in the wood limited how much I could cut in certain areas. But great beauty was revealed as the old layers were taken off. These areas of beauty in the wood were the result of some trauma the tree had gone through. Wind, storms, bugs and even the minerals in the soil had each left their mark on the tree.

At one point I stepped back an looked at the shop. I noticed something interesting. There was a stripe of water on the ceiling, the wall behind the lathe and on me. The block was green so it was losing water as I turned. God impressed on me that the water from the chunk was like the tears that I had shed while He worked on me. And notice, He said, “some of those tears landed on Me” Wow what an awesome God!

Cut, sanded, polished and ready; the bowl now sets where I can be reminded of what He could see in me when I was a dirty, mossy, cast away chunk.

As the world events unfold around us, many may ask the question "why should I care"? It is a fair question. Afterall how can what is happening in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, or Gaza effect me living here?
However we have been left us in this world to influence it. Left here by Jesus. He did not arrange it so that when we accept Him as savior, we are taken out of the world to heaven. On the contrary, He left us in the world.
It is all to easy to relax in our safety and become complacent. When was the last time you allowed God to burden you with something that caused you to change your scheduled activities so that you could either spend time in prayer or actually help some one? I am not judging, I am asking. I point at myself in the mirror and I don't like the answers I get sometimes. We can make a difference, because as we pray or labor God intervenes and changes things. Although the greatest change will always happen in us. Have you allowed yourself to be changed lately?

I was talking with Ken the other day and I mentioned the Lieberman in Black Face | NewsBusters.org and he had not seen any of it.

Down to the "Safe"

After all these years we finally went down to see the Mariners play. Seattle Pacific was offering tickets purchased as a group and our group was 13 people. Tim, Rachel, her parents, brother, sister,Ken and Brenda, their friend Tre, Sue and I and of course Carrie. Rounding out the group was a friend from Carrie's church. We were up in the nose bleeds down the left field line. The mariners did not win. But there were two homeruns hit and both went over the fence right below us.

The evening began with diner at Anthony's Fish bar. The traffic had made us late but orders were just being taken when we arrived. Rachel's parents were visiting from Seoul. They have gone now after a busy week. Two days were spent up here with us and we had a great time reconnecting with them.

Light Show and Fireworks

Last Wednesday Ken and Brenda were in town and we decided to go down to the Celebration of Light, a fireworks display set to music. We packed a picnic supper and had a great time. I took some pictures with my camera phone but they are still in the phone, sorry.

We had a spot right on the water and the folks around us had a radio we could here the music that accompanied the fireworks. That night was sponsored by Italy. Well last night, the show was sponsored by China, inventors of fireworks so it was supposed to be the biggest. I don't know how it was. We chose not to fight the traffic again.
Well this morning between three and seven God supplied the best show of all. A rare, for us in the city, thunder and lightning display that rattled the walls and flashed with such brilliance that it put the fireworks into a lower category. The music in this case was internal, provided by the listener. Mine was praise for an awesome God and thanksgiving for safety. The finale included a downpour and hail for added emphasis.

What a show. Brandy was not impressed, but neither was she upset. She lay with her head out the window taking it all in. Her attitude showed a level of comfort that we all should have in the midst of a storm like that. She was safe and her masters were there.
In the midst of our storms we need to remember that we are safe and our Master is there. Once we remember that, we can enjoy the awesome display.

After appearing on a popular game show, winning an insane amount of money, Ken Jennings has an interesting way of showing just what kind of a guy he is. He came from obscurity and has bitten the hand that fed him.

It has been an uneventful weekend and after the week we had it was surely welcome. My sister has a blog and she has explained what the family is going through so I will only point you there. Suffice it to say that all prayer possible are appreciated.

The time seemed long at work(CFNBC) this last week. Both Mr. B and I are struggling with the summer drought. He with the grass and bushes and me with the drought of finances. It is a problem caused by not having an actual summer semester. In a nut shell, the income drops to zero while the expenses continue on unabated. And as I have come to realize that results in what the banking world calls a negative cash flow. And surprise, surprise they don't like it. Well here is a little secret, I don't either.

So today being Sunday, we took our day of rest and after church have done nothing but relax. Each of us dosed a bit and then begin to talk about dinner. Sue did some freezer diving and came up with two steaks that had been resting in there for better then a year. So the main dish was chosen. This put me in charge of the actual cooking, because steak in this house means on the grill! Not Bar-b-que, just on the grill.

A couple of weeks ago I came across a recipe in a summer time magazine for a spicy rub for meat of the bovine nature. It was called "gunslinger" and sounded right up our ally. So a steak, baked potato, bap roll, grilled Caesar and a glass of....tea made for a fitting cap to this day of rest.

Another Block falls into Place

As we began the process of applying for a Provincial Charter four years ago, several factors helps to convince us our pursuit was correct. There are several things that are almost universal needs in the life of a student, regardless of the school they attend. If a student is from "out of Province" but is Canadian the best option for them in the area of insurance is to keep their home province's coverage. Unfortunately, because we were not a "designated school" our students wee forced to change to the insurance provided by BC. That almost guaranteed an increase. If a student was from another country and happened to be married with children, they would have to apply for and pay for study permits for the children too. Also at great expense.

After our charter was passed, we began the process of becoming a "designated school" and today we received notice that we made it! Praise the Lord! The most obvious outcome of being on the "list" is we are approved for government student loans. We don't necessarily encourage student to use this method for their whole education because it really is affordable if a part-time job is found. But just to know the option is there adds to our potential.

So rejoice! Another block falls into place.

Okay, I admit that I read a lot of news. I follow interesting headlines and sometimes as my son sez, "they just write themselves". That is the deal with this one. I followed a headline link to ,this site. The headline "Store wants to shock chickens to death for customers " sez it all or at least it should. But half way down the article you see this quote:"Every morning, the chickens are given a fatal electric shock, de-feathered, cleaned, cut, and put on the shelves. Trujillo says no live chickens remain in the back for more than five hours. Followed by this one:"There is no butchering or slaughtering whatsoever," said Trujillo. "It's a sophisticated state-of-the-art technology."
Now if you are a chicken, be assured that there is not going to be any "butchering or slaughtering" taking place. You will only experience a shock, be de-feathered, cleaned (this means gutted) and cut up into little pieces. So don't worry!

In the midst of our busy life.

This last week at school was quite a week. Not at school but during that time period. (I tend to measure time by where I am and what I'm doing)
My mother was scheduled for surgery and we also found out that a very good friend and a boardmember from CFN was in the hospital. Need less to say we spent extra time reflecting on these two special people and life in general. Both have returned home although the recovery period is yet unknown for either.
Life is filled with many challenges and not the least of them is finding time to pray. How foolish is that statement! If we have time for nothing else prayer should never be left out. But moments of prayer for others reminds me how I have let prayerfulness slip from my conscience thoughts. I would pray but not enough.
I have been reading a book-"The PastorÂs Soul Volume 7: Deepening Your Conversation With God" in the mornings and today I came across these words: Ora Labora. Now I knew I had seen them before and as theexplanationn came Irecognizedd the source. Benedict, of the Order of that name, from church history. It basically means pray and work. Benedict "taught his followers that to pray was to work, and to work was to pray." I was reminded that while I can and should pray in a quite place, I can also pray in the midst of everything else I do. In fact if I maintain my prayerfulness the very work I am doing becomes part of the prayer. Hummmperhapss I am not to old to learn something new after all.

As Ken wrote in his blog, they made a whirlwind tour of Vancouver and surrounding areas. I am glad that we are one of those areas. It was good to see them and even better to know that they only live two hours South of us. Carrie is ten minutes from them and Tim and Rachel are just across the water.
It is the weekend and Carrie is up for her vacation. She plans to veg and catch up on some craft projects while relaxing in the back yard while not listening to the sounds of chickens clucking and roosters crowing. We have tickets to Bard on the Beach for later in the week and it will be fun to introduce another family member to this Shakespearian treat. I have a fresh cup of Muan Jai coffee and the sounds of the anniversary fountain is providing soft background noise to a beautiful summer evening.

Yep, All is well in the North West

As Carrie has noted, the family is complete again for the first time in a long time. We live in the same time zone and while not ten minutes away, Ken and Brenda are just two short hours away.

We helped unload the truck and at least their stuff is in their living room. Brenda's sister, Angela, and a close family friend, Tre, were there to help. Some water damage and time will tell how it will all shake out but suffice it to say "it does not matter" what has happened to things, they arrived safe. After getting one call after a vehicle turned upside down, I will rejoice in never getting one of those calls again.

The saga of the trip will be told another time by those involved but the retelling only gets funnier each time. And in our family one thing we can all do is tell stories. For those who prayed with us, thank you.

I must confess that I did not take any. Although there were some nice cars there, mostly a family of 55,56, and 57 Chevy Belair's, I did not take the camera with us. It was a nice little show, lots of face painters, hot dogs and popcorn. A clown on stilts and another making balloon animals rounded out the little celebration. I will let you know if we win anything in the draw. But don't hold your breath, I'm not!

Wedding Weekend

Today has dawned bright and blue, which is what is needed when we are scheduled to attend a weeding with an outdoor reception. Now that is faith! Tracie and Mike will tie the knot today. It should be a great time of celebration and reconnection. They are both students and we will no doubt see many of the other students in the crowd.

Before that though, Sue and I are walking over to the new shopping center and see a couple of customized cars. It is the grand opening of Westminster Credit and the whole center is sharing in the party. Plenty of draws and prizes so maybe we will win a free movie rental. I will to post a picture or two if the cars are worth it. Now if there are any old trucks!

Our two oldest are moving back into the area and we are going to help unload the truck on Monday afternoon. That is a treat totally unexpected but long prayed for. Just last night Sue and I were talking about having all seven of us together one day soon. Oh the joy!

Not even for a bet

There have been times that Sue has looked at hats and coats for Brandy. The most she ever got were raindeer antlers for Christmas time. One of our students sent these pictures (kudo's to Paty) and I wanted to pass them along for the laugh factor. I would not even dress up my sisters dog in these!
